In our rush to get ready for album release party at the beginning of the month, we completely forgot to post this review of Speed Of Soul by Sam Pfeilfe of The Portland Phoenix. Dig it people…
People probably underestimate how hard it is to play the brass and woodwinds (saxophone=woodwind). They ain’t harmonicas. Breath control and omberture? They take practice.
Maybe that’s why an arrangement of alto and baritone sax, trombone, and trumpet combining to front a band like Mama’s Boomshack grabs your attention so completely. There just aren’t many bands doing that.
We won’t spoil the rest, go ahead and give it a read for yourself. Lots of love to Mr. Pfeilfe for the kind words and also to whichever staffer at The Phoenix who decided to feature Lisa and John on the front cover of that issue!
If you’re not in the area and want to grab a copy of the new album, you have some options… The album is currently available in CD form at Bull Moose locations (Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, and Lewiston) as well as through their website. Listeners can visit our Bandcamp page to download the album in various lossless formats or purchase downloads through iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and other online stores.
Wednesday night, the good folks over at Asylum hosted the Portland Music Awards where the winners of the Portland Phoenix’s 2013 Best Music Poll were announced. In a field of really good bands that made up the Best R&B / Soul / Funk Act category… we, unfortunately, did not win. So first off, congratulations go out to local institution Sly-Chi for their win – we’re very happy for such a talented group of musicians. Also, lots of love to the other nominees – it was great just to stand shoulder to shoulder with y’all.
Most of all, thanks to all of YOU – the people who voted for us and are the reason we made it into the poll in the first place. It’s our pleasure to play for you and we love you all – even the ones who get a little too friendly at the end of the night. It’s okay, excessive amounts of alcohol will do that. It’s folks like you who are the reason we could come in second in what was a very loaded group of bands – that’s absolutely huge for us and we’re thrilled.
Y’all are un-funkin-believable.
Greetings Funkonauts! Once again, it’s time to break out all that funky soul music that you love and bring it to one of the most hoppin’ joints in Portland! Come check us out at Bull Feeney’s this Funky Friday night. The beat drops at 9:30 pm and there’s never a cover for Funky Friday. The address is 375 Fore Street, or you can just listen for the party and see us gettin’ down in that second story corner window.
While we’re chatting so amiably, why not also throw in another reminder to vote for us in this year’s Portland Phoenix Best Music Poll as the Best R&B/Soul/Funk Act. While you’re there, throw a couple votes to the Fogcutters and all your favorite artists and musicians.
We’re honored to be nominated in the Portland Phoenix 2013 Best Music Poll in the Best R&B/Soul/Funk Act category. It’s amazing to see our names alongside other bands whose music we really like, so we’d also like to congratulate them as well.
Funkonauts, we’ve been having a blast getting out on stage and playing for you over the last almost 3 years. As much as we love music, it just wouldn’t be the same playing to empty rooms – so thank you for coming out to shows, paying covers, plowing through snowstorms, fending off giant bats, and all the other assorted nonsense. We’re looking forward to continuing our quest to bring funky soul music to the masses!
All that being said, we’re a pretty big underdog in this whole deal – so we’d love your help! Go ahead and vote for us and then spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, MySpace (that’s still a thing, right?), or whatever works for you.
Thanks again and keep the funk alive!
